Gainesville Uses a Pair of Home Runs to Ride to 5-1 Victory by Eric Edmonson
Gainesville comes out of the break hot as they have won their seventh straight and now have a 12-4 record and sit in second place.
Gainesville, GA
The Gol'Diggers remain red hot as they picked up their seventh win in a row against the Bucks on Monday night.
In a season where the pitching has been an overall question, the hurlers for Gainesville showed up big time as they held the Bucks to one run across the full nine. Paul Farley started off the game, and the UGA arm was dazzling as usual. Consistently finding velocity and break, Farley collected seven strikeouts across his five innings of work, allowing no runs.
Behind him was Daniel Machado, who settled in after allowing a home run to the first batter he faced. That would be the only run Brookhaven scored that evening. Machado finished his work, completing the sixth and seventh innings, opening the door for Stiles Begnaud.
Begnaud came in and slammed the door on the Bucks, leading Gainesville to a 5-1 win. This is two straight outings for the bullpen that have been excellent for the Gol'Diggers and as they look to head into the travel half of their schedule with tough competition slated, they will need some players to step up in the big spots in the later innings.
A very ho-hum performance for the pitching staff, and that is a great thing considering some of the rocky outings for them this season, but there's something to be said about the bend-and-not-break mentality that is ingrained in the DNA of the bullpen for Gainesville as they look to show their stuff down the stretch.
It's safe to say that the offense has found its footing. Core pieces continue to hit as both Ira Jefferies-Harris and Grayson McCollum went yard in this contest. For McCollum it was his first of the year, and it was a big three-run home run that put the game away. While the lineup remains solid in contact and results the strikeouts come creeping up on them in spots with runners on base. Gainesville hasn't felt the effects of the swing and miss just yet, but as the competition ramps up, it might come back to bite the squad.
Gainesville has been running hot in the offensive department ever since the second game at Lake Oconee, where it truly felt like something clicked with the lineup. It wasn't a walk that came around to score on the other team's fault or a one-run inning that keeps them in the game for a few innings. It became a true factory line. Production feeding production with the team utilizing their ball-in-play skills along with their speed as they continue to lead the SBL in stolen bases.
One of the refreshing developments over the past week of action is that the power has come back to this Gainesville team. Not just putting the ball over the fence, but Gainesville is finding gaps for doubles leading the way to big innings, which has been the team's strong suit all season long. The Gol'Diggers will hang with the opposing team until one inning decides the game more often than not. Whether that inning comes in the first or the seventh, Gainesville finds a way.
A familiar feeling win for Gainesville as they look to continue to stack breezy victories, and it's no secret how they got there. Twelve strikeouts for the pitching staff and a pair of home runs for the lineup, with Grayson McCollum being the offensive player for the evening, picking up 4 RBI with a homer.
We are officially in the second half of the season, and Gainesville looks to return to playoffs in hopes of their first SBL title run since 2023. Some questions that surrounded the team a few weeks ago have seemingly been answered, as both play and vibes are high right now.
Gainesville is 12-4.
