Gainesville Wins Sixth Straight Off the Back of Dominant Pitching
Gainesville is the hottest team in the SBL winning six straight and taking sole possession of second place going into the SBL break.
Gainesville, GA
The Gol'Diggers entered Monday's game with an air of confidence. The team has begun to find its chemistry, and Monday's game against the Cannons was seemingly a culmination of it. Good hitting, great pitching, and baseball IQ led the team to victory.
The Pitching
This was the story of the night for the Gol'Diggers. Gainesville has been a team that has shown some inconsistencies in the pitching department, but tonight the mantle was helmed by UGA's Justin Byrd and Paul Farley, along with Western Carolina's Maret Drye coming out of the bullpen for the ninth inning.
Justin Byrd got the starting nod and did not disappoint, setting down the side in the top of the first inning in strikeout fashion. That would be the norm for Byrd as he rolled through the lineup and didn't allow a baserunner until his second time through the order. Byrd showcased a blinding fastball and an unhittable cutter that kept Cartersville batters uneasy all evening. By the end of his night, Byrd had gone five innings, collecting eight strikeouts en route to picking up the win in the contest.
Following Byrd was no easy feat, but fellow Bulldog Paul Farley came on and followed well. Farley flashed a great fastball in the contest, but what really stood out was a wicked slider that was nigh unhittable, causing many whiffs and freezing batters alike. Across three innings, Farley kept the zeros coming, finishing his outing after the eighth.
With the win three outs away, Maret Drye was tasked with the job of shutting the door in the ninth. Drye has been a key piece of the Gainesville bullpen and has sometimes bent and not broken but has been massively important in covering innings and getting work done on the road. The Cannons got to Drye early as a pair reached and put the righty into a tough situation, and although a 2 RBI double put the Cannons within striking distance, they never got any closer as Drye dug his feet in and slammed the door on the ninth-inning rally, ending the game with an emphatic called strike three to pick up the strikeout.
A dominant pitching performance to close out the first half for the Gol'Diggers led to a very breezy win on a humid, hot Monday night.
The Hitting
The lineup coming into the year was known to be a potentially potent one, but it took some time to get their feet underneath them. But with a wicked combination of speed and contact at their side, the Gol'Diggers are constantly forcing their opponents to make the perfect play. And don't let too many runners get on because the big bats of Ira Jefferies-Harris and Samuel Bradley are bound to send them home.
In Monday's game, the lineup set the tone with Jacob Bohacek reaching on an error and coming all the way around to score. Gainesville would not have their signature big inning in this game, but scoring at least one run each inning through three isn't a bad way to live. The team has shown that it doesn't put their feet up as the game goes along. They are always hungry and searching for more, and it showed as more tack-on runs came through as the offense put up five runs to back up a dominant pitching performance on the night.
Going into the second half for the team, they will look to find bottom-of-the-order consistency, as the top half has proved themselves and smoothed things out. The lineup feeds itself night in and night out, which is exactly what you like to see from a squad of this talent caliber.
Gainesville looks to get rested and get right going into the break, and it certainly doesn't hurt to go into said break with a long win streak and the performances to back it up. Gainesville will open the second half at home against the Brookhaven Bucks on July 7th. The Gol'Diggers currently sit in second place in the SBL with a lot of baseball ahead of them and plenty of time to keep pace and stay hot going into the playoffs later this month.
Gainesville is 11-4 at the break.
